MINISTER’S LETTER
This year is my year to attend the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. It is now only every fourth year that we, as a local church, are represented at the Assembly. As I write this I am still contemplating what the Assembly may bring but it will be over by the time you read it. There is often controversy and determined debate at this annual gathering of ministers and elders of the Kirk. Last year saw a major area of controversy opening up in the church – dealing with same sex relationships and the ministry. It will be taken up again at future Assemblies but this year different issues will be coming to the fore.
Perhaps the issue of greatest concern today is the financial situation of the national church. The Ministries Council will report that the church’s financial reserves will run out in a few years and that there will be insufficient income to support the current number of ministries in the church. Only about a third of churches pay sufficient funds to support a minister. All the other churches, including our own, are supported by the overstretched wealthier churches. The solution presented by the Ministries Council will be that of aiming to reduce the number of ministries by over 110, a reduction of 11%, in the next four years.
These are serious economic times, but wouldn’t it be far better if the people of the church were to say: “We are sure that God wants his church to grow and thrive in this nation. We will do what is necessary, including giving in a more committed and sacrificial way, to make sure this is the case!” Perhaps the church does need to review its deployment of ministries. But, for the future, it is up to each one of us how we respond to the needs of the times. We may look around us at the state of the world and think how much it needs God’s Word and the forgiveness and life he offers. A strong, well resourced, church can make a difference but even more than that, a church which honours God will know the power that God gives to change the world. At Pentecost we are reminded that God gave his Spirit and his power to a small group of Christians who lived to honour him – and the church was born. God can do the same today through a people committed to honouring him. Surely we can also make that our aim.
Your friend and minister,
David

Evening Praise Services
We have been holding an evening praise service once a month since September. These evenings are about simply enjoying ourselves and praising our amazing God. We are trying to introduce some of the new songs which are found in the new updated ‘Mission Praise’ book. The band have had fun learning and performing these songs but nothing makes it more rewarding and worthwhile for us than having a large group of people to sing along ‘with gusto’. Hope you will join us next time.

Conferences
A few of us attended the Mission Africa Conference in Stirling, hearing firsthand about the January riots in Jos which resulted in many Christians being killed and others made homeless when their houses were burned down. Pray that the present peace will continue.
Musa and Pamela are returning to Jos after a long furlough, they now have a new baby called Gracie. Ricky and Angie are going to serve in Nigeria for the first time, they too have a young baby called Noah. Both couples ask for prayer as they settle, also for daily protection.
Our church recently hosted a conference by ‘Release Women’. We had quite a few ladies from our own congregation as well as others from as far afield as Pittenweem and Edinburgh. It was a very meaningful experience, opening our eyes and our hearts to the trials our Christian sisters face in many parts of the world.
Linda, who led the conference, introduced Yasmin, a lady who grew up in Pakistan, came to England where she later became a Christian. Yasmin had an extraordinary testimony, first keeping her conversion secret, then facing persecution from her own family when she made it known.
Florence from Belfast shared about a recent visit to China, where many Christians face fear and persecution daily as they follow their faith. Linda had many similar person stories to tell from her recent visit to Egypt.
Please pray for Christians who don’t have the freedom we do to openly follow their faith.

Door Duty Rota
With the change to Unitary Constitution door duties have become the responsibility of the Welcome and Worship Group. It has not been possible to give details of door duties in this Newsletter, however, the group will be meeting shortly and all welcomers will be given details of their dates on the door shortly afterwards.

Transit Chair
A ‘Transit chair’ has been purchased by the church. This is to be used to help people out of church in an emergency situation. We have had a few incidents in the last few months where it would have been extremely useful. All first aiders will be instructed in how to use the ‘transit chair’ in the case of emergency.

Church Telephone and Broadband
BCNC has had a telephone installed in the church office which can be used to make calls in the case of any emergency within the church building and for any other church business.
Wireless broadband has also been installed and will be of great benefit to the various organisations using the church buildings. Any user of the hall is welcome to bring their own laptop into church to use the fibre optic broadband facilities. Please see Andy or David for the broadband password.

Did You Know - You can contribute towards the cost of producing, printing and posting the Newsletter to members and friends of the Church near and far. All donations are very welcome as this is a very important part of our mission.
Finance Group
As Treasurer I am hoping to have a small group of people who would like to be involved in counting the offering after the Service. This has been done in the past by the ladies and gentleman who are on duty at the front door, but this makes it difficult for those who welcome to say their farewells and to mix and mingle with those who have stayed behind for refreshments. The Finance Group are happy for all the Welcomers to be part of the Group but you would not be expected to perform both duties on the same days. Anyone interested in being part of this group of Counters please speak to Margaret Clark, Treasurer. If we get quite a few names it might be that you would be involved once per month or less.
Did You Know - We have a Flower List. This is found as you enter the front door of the Church. There are dates against which you can put your name if you wish to donate flowers or monies to purchase flowers on a date which has special memories for you. If you wish to buy the flowers then these should be in the Church on the morning of the Thursday prior to the date or you can donate monies to Mrs. Morain Black, Flower Convener, who will ensure that flowers are purchased and arranged for you. There is also a Flower Box at the front door were you can make monetary donations to the Flower Fund which helps to ensure that there are always flowers in the Church.

Our church has recently appointed a youth worker.
Kirsty Moffat joined us at the beginning of May and will be working 5 hours a week on youth projects for the church and another 5 hours on a joint project with the Initiative to run a youth club in our halls. We are currently making plans for the youth club and we would like to hear from people who feel they could volunteer to help with the youth club. Kirsty is 23 and comes from Canada where her father is a Presbyterian minister. Her parents came originally from Scotland so Kirsty has dual nationality and plans to make Scotland her home – at least for the foreseeable future. Kirsty is an enthusiastic Christian with a passion to see young people grow in faith and their love for God. She currently worships in a church in Edinburgh where she sings in the praise band. Please make Kirsty welcome and encourage her in her work with us.

New Members and Baptisms
It’s been a busy spring at Beath and Cowdenbeath North Church. On 7th March we admitted four new members to our church. Liz Rae and Leeann Kinleyside confessed their faith in Christ and were baptised into membership while Mary Clark and Niall Fotheringham were admitted on confession of their faith in Christ. We also welcomed a number of folk that day who have joined our fellowship in the recent past: Shona Beattie, Catherine Ritchie, Ernest and Irene Adams, Iain and Kirsteen Penman and their children Hannah and Ewan, Beth Watson, Florence Wilson and Grace Gray. Then, on 18th April, Meena Sallan was admitted to membership through her confession of faith in Christ and baptism. Her and Jason’s young son Jay was also baptised that day. Two weeks later, on 2nd May, Nigel and Fiona Rae brought their daughter Emily to be baptised. It’s good to see that our church is a growing church and one where families and children are always welcome. God has richly blessed us!

Pen pictures When new people join our fellowship we invite them to write a short article to introduce themselves, and share a little bit about their lives. Here we have such a piece from Shona, we hope you enjoy reading the article and welcoming her.
My name is Shona Beattie. I grew up in Cowdenbeath where I have stayed most of my life. I am married to Craig and have two children, David and Danielle. I am a staff nurse working in both hospitals: Queen Margaret Hospital and Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy. I really enjoy my job and find it very rewarding. I attended the Alpha course two years ago and really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was friendly and allowed me to ask questions and share opinions. Since then I assisted in the Alpha Course last year and I attend a Home Group. I enjoy my worship on a Sunday and find the church atmosphere warm and friendly. Thank you everyone for making me welcome. Shona x
